JSC GNPP Aerogeofizika has successfully completed an airborne gravity and magnetic survey in Irkutsk Oblast, which will help identify previously undiscovered gas reserves and establish a modern geophysical basis for hydrocarbon exploration.
The Kovykta gas-condensate field has the largest gas reserves in eastern Russia and is classified as a unique field.
Work to investigate deep subsurface structure and discover new gas reserves began at the end of the 1st quarter of 2019 using modern airborne gravity and magnetic surveying. This combination of methods significantly reduces uncertainty in the geological structure of the field and adjacent areas and enables large volumes of data to be acquired in the shortest possible time, supporting targeted planning of oil and gas prospecting in the most promising areas.
The investigations covered a total area of approximately 55150 km2, with a spacing of 500 m between survey lines.
Geological exploration at the Kovykta gas-condensate field is being conducted as part of the Eastern Gas Programme, which provides for the development of new gas production centres in eastern Russia.
The final investigation results will be ready in May 2021.
